WASHINGTON — The Prince George’s County firefighter wounded by gunshots in Temple Hills earlier this month is now back home.
Department spokesman Mark Brady says 19-year-old Kevin Swain was released from Baltimore Shock Trauma around 8 p.m. Saturday, more than a week after he was shot four times..
On Monday, officials said Swain’s condition was improving and he was moved out of the intensive care unit.
On April 15, firefighters responded to a “welfare check” on Sharon Road. Officials said a man opened fire on emergency responders who entered his home after he didn’t answer the door.
Firefighter and paramedic John Ulmschneider, 39, died from injuries suffered during the shooting. The resident’s brother was also wounded.
Two other firefighters were also hurt in the incident.
“They were in the process of dragging one of our folks back and in that process they were injured, in the process of dragging and falling and pulling back,” said Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor.
Swain’s family set up a YouCaring account where people can give to a charity fund set up in his name.
An online fund has also been established to help support Ulmschneider’s family. He left behind a wife and 2-year-old daughter.
